Why Supplying Sprays in a Hamster Cage Is Encouraged
Sprays — such as millet, flax, or oat sprays — are highly recommended by hamster experts and rescue centres because they offer natural enrichment, encourage instinctive behaviours, and provide a nutritious, low-risk treat. In the wild, hamsters forage for seeds and grains directly from plants. Sprays recreate this experience, allowing them to pull, nibble, and strip seeds just as they would in nature.
Providing sprays supports:
✔ Mental stimulation
Hamsters must work to remove each seed, which keeps them occupied and reduces boredom-related stress.
✔ Physical activity
Manipulating sprays helps maintain mobility and keeps muscles active, especially for less confident or older hamsters.
✔ Natural foraging & confidence building
Sprays encourage hamsters to explore their space, giving them the freedom to interact with their environment at their own pace.
✔ Healthy nutrition
Most sprays are low in fat and high in beneficial nutrients, making them a safer alternative to many high-calorie treats.
✔ Suitable for all hamsters
Sprays are soft, easy to chew, and safe for both dwarfs and Syrians — including elderly or special-needs hamsters.

We recommend freezing all sprays and foraging items for 48 hours, allowing them to defrost for 24 hours, and then freezing again for a further 48 hours.
This process helps ensure the items are completely pest-free and safe for your small animals.
